The site is located in Perth and was acquired from Shore Recycling in August 2023 after a large fire hit the facility in February that year.
Enva has put a multi-million-pound investment into the site. It was originally set to open in Spring 2024 and was later pushed back to summer 2024 after receiving its permits in March 2024.
The site has a capacity of 4,000 fridges and 300 tonnes of SDA per week, including kettles, toasters, vacuum cleaners and coffee machines.
The WEEE recycler said that the equipment installed on-site – which includes degassing, shredding and recycling technologies – will ensure that over 98% of the fridges components will be recovered.
Commenting on the opening, Enva’s managing director, Barry Phillips, said: “This facility represents another outstanding piece of Scottish recycling infrastructure and will create valuable jobs for the local community. It will play a crucial role in enhancing the availability of high-quality recyclable materials, thus reducing pressure on virgin resources and supporting the development of a circular economy.
“While it will eliminate the need to transport waste fridges and SDA long distances for processing outside the country, it will also provide valuable continuity and resilience capacity for other parts of the UK if needed.”
Fire at Shore Recycling site
On 28 February 2023, Scottish Fire and Rescue Services (SFRS) were alerted to a fire at the Shore Recycling site at Friarton Bridge Park in Perth.
The blaze is understood to have involved approximately 200 tonnes of scrap material. Police Scotland described the incident as an explosion and a fire.
One man tragically died in the fire and another was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Chief Inspector Tom Leonard, area commander for Perth and Kinross, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died at what is a very difficult time for them.”
