Entries call for 2006 Awards for Excellence

Entries are being sought for the 2006 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.

Organised by letsrecycle.com in association with Resource Management and Recovery Magazine, and supported by the Waste Implementation Programme (Defra), Environmental Services Association, Environment Agency and National Association of Waste Disposal Officers, this year’s awards will be presented on October 12 at the Savoy Hotel in London.

The awards provide a showcase for innovation, dedication and success in recycling and sustainable waste management.

Last year's ceremony was presented by ITV newscaster Mary Nightingale, with a keynote speech from Oliver Letwin MP.

Addressing an audience of some 300 industry representatives, then-shadow environment secretary Mr Letwin said: “It is events like this, which celebrate innovation in recycling and waste management, that help spread the word about the importance of waste to a wider audience.”

Winners
Chosen from 140 entries, among the winners in 2005 were the London borough of Barnet, which has brought in compulsory recycling for its residents; Katrina Alexander, who has brought recycling to Bullingdon prison; and a two-man collection crew from Daventry.

Other awards went to salad company Natures Way Foods, Viridor and the Suffolk Recycling Consortium, high street retailer Wineflair and two county councils – Shropshire and Somerset. Kevin Pickaver of Rushcliffe borough council was named “local authority recycling champion”.

Categories
This year's awards will again include nine categories:

  • Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative, sponsored by Abitibi-Consolidated Recycling Europe;
  • Innovation in Design of a Waste Management Facility, sponsored by ESTET;
  • CA Site of the Year, sponsored by Transform;
  • Resource Management Industry and Local Authority Partnership, sponsored by PaperChain;
  • Commercial Recycling Champion, sponsored by Valpak;
  • Local Authority Recycling Champion, sponsored by recycling.co.uk;
  • Commercial Waste Management Initiative, sponsored by Shanks;
  • Retail Recycling Champion, sponsored by Severnside;
  • Collection Crew of the Year, sponsored by SITA UK.

Wastelink will sponsor the pre-lunch drinks at the awards presentation.

Judges
A distinguished panel of judges, under the chair of Environment Agency policy manager Jeff Cooper, includes includes Chris Davey of WRAP; Steve Eminton, editor, letsrecycle.com; Barbara Herridge, Waste Watch; Kamila Horak, DHL Exel Supply Chain; Marian Kelly, Environmental Services Association; Chris Murphy, Chartered Institution of Wastes Management; Kevin Pickaver, Rushcliffe Borough Council and David Symmers, Independent Waste Paper Processors Association.

“We are delighted with the response we have received since launching these new awards,” said letsrecycle.com editor Steve Eminton. “Both in terms of the number of entries received, as well as the wonderful window they provide on best practice within an important and fast-growing industry sector. This year’s awards offer an exciting range of categories, from the all-important collection service level through to the construction of modern waste management facilities.”

Entry
To enter this year's awards, submit a 500-750 word summary of how the nominated project achieved success in recycling or waste management. This must primarily cover the 2005/06 financial year.

Entrants may nominate themselves for more than one category, or be nominated by colleagues.

Supporting material should help explain the entry, and may include printed matter, statistical data, photographs, copies of media coverage and where appropriate, product samples.
