The two companies came up with this interim solution to the 'f;ridge mountain' to fill the gap until Grundon's recycling plant in Berkshire opens at the end of the year.
Redundant fridges will either be collected by Grundon from secure local authority sites, or delivered direct to its transfer station at Ewelme, Oxfordshire. After initial checking they will then be shipped to Hanover.
SULO's plant there removes the CFCs from coolant circuits and insulation foam. It can handle between 50 and 60 fridges an hour.
The firm said that 98% of fridges are recycled, and the remaining 2% incinerated at an energy from waste plant.
Grundon managing director Richard Skehens said: “The use of overseas facilities provides hard stretched local authorities with an interim solution.”
Grundon's planned Berkshire facility will use SULO technology, and be imported to the UK in a 3 million investment.
