The Manchester-based company previously had a 50% stake in the metal recycling division of continental company Newco AG as well as an operation in the US. Now, the company has bought the remaining 50% share of Newco's metal recycling division which operates operates from European scrap terminals at Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Brnsbttle.
The Rotterdam and Hamburg facilities have shearing equipment for processing scrap. EMR continues to hold a 50% stake in the ferrous trading division of Newco.
The expansion has been on the cards for several years and follows a steady progress of acquisition by what was originally the Shephard metal recycling business in the North West. In recent years the company has acquired Coopers and Mayer Parry Recycling.
Colin Iles, Managing Director of EMR, said: “I am delighted at EMR's acquisition of Newco's metal recycling operations in Germany, Holland and the US.
“The deal represents a significant step in EMR's overseas development plans, helping to consolidate our global strengths in metal recycling.”
The Newco metal recycling business has begun trading under the EMR name and existing management will remain in place.
EMR's growth curve is expected to continue rising as it starts to play an increased role in sectors such as electronics and vehicles where recycling legislation is being implemented.
