Eco Sustainable Solutions generates 10% more ‘green’ power in 2021

Dorset-based organics recycler Eco Sustainable Solutions says it generated 10.4% more “green” energy from biomass and anaerobic digestion (AD) in 2021 than in 2020.

Eco Sustainable Solutions operates an AD plant near Dorchester and a combined heat and power (CHP) biomass plant near Bournemouth. The company processes organic waste from across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire.

Earlier this week (12 October), Eco Sustainable Solutions published a sustainability report for 2021, showing it recycled more than 236,500 tonnes of waste in 2021.

The company recycled 40,481 tonnes of food waste, generating 12,415 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity, and sent 48,618 tonnes of wood waste for energy recovery during the year.

It also says it recycled 67,439 tonnes of garden waste, 58,214 tonnes of excavated soil and 21,788 tonnes of street sweepings.

The company supplies the energy it generates from AD to a neighbouring animal feed mill.

Justin Dampney, Eco Sustainable Solutions’ chief operating officer, said: “The output from our green energy plants have underpinned many of our achievements this year. These are the direct result of measures that our teams have implemented to improve reliability and output.

“It’s not easy creating energy from waste, but our dedicated and professional operators, engineers, technicians and managers ensure that these facilities operate efficiently and above all, extremely safely.”

Eco Sustainable Solutions claims it prevented 147,714 tonnes of CO2 emissions in total in 2021 by diverting waste from landfill.

2021

Among the other highlights for 2021 published in the report, Eco Sustainable Solutions says it prevented almost 30 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere by using hydrotreated vegetable oil to power its fleet rather than diesel.

The company also says it recently introduced hybrid excavator to its fleet, allowing it to reduce diesel usage by 20%.

And, Eco Sustainable Solutions says it suffered no RIDDOR reportable accidents in 2021. “To have zero lost time injuries is another fantastic achievement and one which we thought aspirational at the start of the year,” Mr Dampney said.

“We operate in the second most dangerous industry in the UK, so ensuring that we all get home to our families and loved ones at the end of the shift can never be taken for granted and we must always strive for better.”

Eco Sustainable Solutions has plans to build a 60,000 tonnes per year capacity energy from waste (EfW) plant in Parley, Dorset (see letsrecycle.com story).
