East Northamptonshire awards waste contract to Cory

Cory Environmental has been re-appointed as waste collection and recycling contractor for East Northamptonshire council.

The new six-year deal, which runs from August 1, will also see Cory providing cleansing services for the council.

Cory will provide all the council's waste management and recycling needs as well as street cleaning and public convenience cleansing services.

” This new contract will enable us to roll out to the whole district the recycling schemes that have been operating in various parts of the district up until now. “
– Cllr John Richardson, East Northamptonshire council

The company said it will be introducing new recycling collections for “a wide range of materials” including glass bottles and jars across the district. A 1 million investment will also go towards new vehicles to help reach the 30% household waste recycling target set by the government for the district.

Commenting on the deal, the leader of East Northamptonshire council, Cllr John Richardson, said: “A key priority for the council is to provide a cleaner environment, and this new contract represents good value for council tax payers in East Northamptonshire. It will also enable us to roll out to the whole district the recycling schemes that have been operating in various parts of the district up until now.”

Lesley Letts, head of development for Cory Environmental’s municipal services business said: “We look forward to helping the Council and residents of East Northamptonshire to achieve the challenges ahead for recycling and in providing a pleasant, clean environment for all those that live and work in the area.”

Kerbside
At the moment, East Northamptonshire council offers residents a weekly kerbside recycling collection service using green boxes, along with weekly black sack collections for general refuse.

Some residents have paper and cans collected via the green box scheme, while others have paper, cans, card, cardboard, textiles and plastic bottles collected from their green boxes to be sorted at a materials recycling facility. Some residents have also had access to a monthly blue box scheme for collecting glass.

East Northamptonshire recycled 20% of household waste in 2003/04, up three percentage points on 2002/03.
