Produced by developer Cloud 9 Technologies, working with the district council, the app is branded to East Devon and gives swift access to waste and recycling information as well as council activities including news, councillor contact details and the districts twitter feed.

East Devon is the largest of the eight Devon districts with a population of 132,457 and is a member of the Devon Waste Partnership.

East Devon waste and recycling manager Paul Deakin explained that once a user had entered their address, they receive information about collections and reminders the night before they are due. And, information can be given about special collection arrangements for public holidays. Residents can also report flytipping and find the location of the nearest recycling centre.

Chris Powell, East Devons head of ICT, said: The mobile app has enabled us to improve customer service whilst also helping to streamline our business processes. The integration with our customer relationship management and other back-office systems means that reported incidents can be handled quickly and efficiently. The East Devon app has proved very popular with our residents.

Planning

Further developments to the app are expected to include the development of a function to search planning applications as well as additional recycling information such as the type of materials which are recycled.

A spokesman for Cloud 9 said that the app was a single point for a whole range of council services. He explained: The app has a number of different modules, each designed to assist the customer with a specific council service. We understand that all councils do things slightly differently, so the modular nature of the app allows for maximum flexibility.”

He added: “We are also happy to develop custom functionality and bespoke solutions where required. Once the resident has entered a postcode and selected their home address, everything in the app is customized for their property and the surrounding area.
