East Anglia&#39s waste campaign is to promote kerbside with the NWAI

This year's “Slim Your Bin” campaign in the Anglian Television area is to concentrate on increasing participation in kerbside collections. And the campaign will receive national coverage through the National Waste Awareness Initiative (NWAI).

The Anglia Region Waste Awareness Campaign (ARWAC) launched the “Slim Your Bin” scheme three years ago to reduce the amount of waste produced in the region. The campaign involves Anglia Television, 41 local authorities, local radio stations and newspapers.

The kerbside awareness-raising initiative will be the fourth annual “Slim Your Bin” campaign held by ARWAC. It is hoped that the initiative will encourage residents to continue recycling as after the initial enthusiasm for a kerbside scheme, participation often falls. ARWAC will run an 18-month recycling roadshow covering 40 districts in the Eastern region to promote kerbside recycling in a bid to increase participation rates by kerbside schemes by 33%.

Each year, the scheme concentrates on a different aspect of minimising waste. Last year's campaign concentrated on composting and previous campaigns have promoted “Buy Recycled” and awareness of recycling and waste minimisation.

Mark Shelton, chair of ARWAC Creative Group, said the “Slim Your Bin” campaign had become well established, is recognised in the community and is thought to be the only recycling roadshow of its kind in the country. He said: “Kerbside collections are now an established way of life for many householders and we expect this theme for our roadshow to be very well supported.”

The scheme will be launched at ARWAC's annual seminar which takes place in Cambridge on February 20. Steve Haugh, campaign co-ordinator from the National Waste Awareness Initiative (NWAI) will explain at the seminar how “Slim Your Bin” can be linked with the NWAI.
