The company claims that the move will create a unified corporate identity, with its focus set to shift to the supply cycle with an emphasis on sending zero waste to landfill. It has also pledged to ensure that materials are used as efficiently as possible across all of its operations.

All DS Smith operations, including DS Smith Packaging, DS Smith Paper and DS Smith Recycling will be known as DS Smith in future.

The move comes 18 months after DS Smith acquired Swedish firm SCA Packaging, making it one of the largest integrated paper and packaging firms in the UK and Europe (see letsrecycle.com story).

Peter McGuinness, chief executive of DS Smiths Recycling Division, said: Its all about making life easier for our customers ensuring they get the best value from their materials. We believe in minimising waste whilst maximising efficiency and cost gains.

‘We are passionate about zero waste, moving all waste streams, including the difficult ones up the waste hierarchy. We focus on achieving the highest possible recycling rate, collecting materials separately to ensure best quality.’

We are building on our cross business expertise and our joined up supply cycle thinking removes the complexity out of traditional supply chains and lightens the load of our customers.

‘Catalyst’

He added: This concept is a catalyst for innovation making sure 100% of resources are turned into something useful once more. Our closed loop management solutions provide end to end recyclability that moves materials up the waste hierarchy.

We are passionate about zero waste, moving all waste streams, including the difficult ones up the waste hierarchy. We focus on achieving the highest possible recycling rate, collecting materials separately to ensure best quality.

Quality is at the heart of everything we do. That goes without saying. But its our perpetual devotion to helping our customers do more with less in a consistently quality way that makes DS Smith stand-out.

DS Smith is part of a multinational group employing over 20,000 people, with a revenue exceeding 3.7 billion. Across Europe DS Smith recovers more than 5.4 million tonnes of paper and packaging annually for recycling.

Group chief executive Miles Roberts said: DS Smith has gone through a major transformation in the last few years. We are now able to offer a much wider product and service portfolio and operate on a much larger scale as a strategic partner with crossindustry expertise, while at the same time continuing to offer our customers a local, personal service.”
