DS Smith expands partnership with Zalando

Packaging firm DS Smith has announced that it is expanding its partnership with German online retailer Zalando to become its principal packaging supplier.

DS Smith has helped Zalando develop a five-year innovation roadmap for its packaging solutions

DS Smith said that the agreement was “driven by a shared need for innovative packaging solutions”.

The company outlined that through collaborating in workshops, it has helped Zalando develop a five-year innovation roadmap for its packaging solutions, which are designed “to drive optimisation and reduce waste in packaging that arrives into the hands of Zalando and its customers”. The collaborative partnership will see the companies work together towards improving in the fields of reuse and packaging efficiency as well as transitioning to the circular economy.

David Fischer, head of logistics, sustainability & packaging innovation at Zalando SE, commented: “DS Smith has proven to be a highly reliable partner for Zalando with great innovative strength. Both the commercial and technical key account management raise the bar for our packaging suppliers.”

Strategic review

DS Smith is one of the major players in the UK cardboard recycling market, supplying some of the big users of cardboard packaging, including online giant Amazon.

Letsrecycle.com has recently reported that DS Smith has entered into a “period of consultation” on the future of six of its UK recycling sites as part of a “strategic review”, with the consultation excluding the company’s paper making operations at Kemsley. A DS Smith spokesperson reasoned that the company is “always evaluating its operations to ensure that they are delivering the best value for its customers”. They confirmed that six of the company’s sites have entered a period of consultation but “will not be commenting further while the consultation is underway” (see letsrecycle.com story).
