The Community Waste Recycling Partnership collects steel, glass, aluminium, paper, textiles and plastics from households in the West Doncaster area.
When the scheme began in November 2005, the not for profit organisation was collecting from around 10,000 households. Figures recently released have shown that in April 2005, the organisation was collecting from 38,000 homes.
In order to handle the increased quantity of material collected because of the new households on the scheme, the organisation recently acquired new equipment from steel reprocessor Corus Steel Packaging and Recycling.
Corus has supplied an overhead magnet that enables steel to be separated quickly and easily from other materials collected from households. The new equipment allows the Doncaster group to collect over 10 tonnes of steel each month.
Positive
David Williams, Corus' commercial manager and recycling development representative of the north and Scotland, said: “It is great to see the positive approach these community schemes are taking to improving recycling rates in the area.
“We were delighted to be able to help the Community Waste Recycling Partnership increase their processing of steel cans in and around Doncaster,” he added.
CWRP is coordinated by Doncaster council, which also operates with two other community recycling schemes – Doncaster Community Recycling Partnership and North Doncaster Community Recycling.
