Dell announces next step in consumer education project

Electronic equipment producer Dell has unveiled the latest stage of its consumer education scheme for waste computer equipment.

The company is currently in the process of implementing a variety of recycling schemes globally, with the primary focus on educating consumers and driving awareness of the importance of recycling electronic equipment.

” There is a real lack of understanding of the options open to consumers looking to dispose of their old computer hardware “
– Jean Cox-Keane, Dell

The latest event will take place at the company's headquarters in Bracknell, Berkshire when Dell offers householders the opportunity to recycle their unwanted computer equipment.

On September 17 2005 the doors to Dell's home will be opened up in order to allow up to five computers and computer related equipment to be brought to the site. Collected computers will then be packed and sent away for recycling. Any make of equipment can be collected at the event, not specifically Dell's.

A similar event was held last year at Dell's European manufacturing site in Limerick, Ireland. Over nineteen tonnes of material was gathered at the event, while in 2003 events have been run since 2003.

Options

Jean Cox-Kearns, Dell's take back and recycling manager, said: “There is a real lack of understanding of the options open to consumers looking to dispose of their old computer hardware. Many do not know you can recycle or donate your old equipment to charity today, at no cost at all.

“Dell is committed to making computer recycling easy and educating consumers that 'no computers should go to waste' – holding these recycling events will help do that,” she added.

Elsewhere, Dell are also offering a free consumer recycling and charitable donations programme for customer's wishing to donate their old Dell hardware to charity.

In order to utilise the scheme, customers have to log onto Dell's website and input the hardware that they wish to be recycled. Dell will then collect the equipment within five working days after the request has been made. Computers will then be passed on to charitable organisations or sent to a partner company for recycling.
