The first alteration late on Thursday saw DEFRA slightly amend the last paragraph of its guidance which meant that kitchen wastes consisting of fruit and vegetables can be composted. The sequence of events was as follows:
Original statement
The last paragraph in the original statement issued by DEFRA yesterday afternoon read:
The government supports the collection of source separated waste and encourages local authorities to continue collection of kitchen waste. Until the new regulation
comes into force local authorities will need to be clear that they are using only green waste collected in this way in compost which is to be used on land.
First revision
The first revised paragraph stated:
The government supports the collection of source separated waste and encourages local authorities to continue collection of kitchen waste. Until the new regulation
comes into force local authorities will need to be clear that they are using only botanical waste (e.g. plants and vegetable / fruit kitchen wastes) collected in this way
in compost which is to be used on land.
Second revision
Friday midday saw another change when DEFRA removed the word kitchen from the last sentence. So (at midday Friday) this now reads:
Until the new regulation
comes into force local authorities will need to be clear that they are using only botanical waste (e.g. plants and vegetable / fruit wastes) collected in this way
in compost which is to be used on land.
