The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs released its guidance on the Waste Incineration Directive yesterday. The move followed the implementation of the directive in the UK on December 28, 2002, as the Waste Incineration Regulations (see letsrecycle.com story).
In December 2002, directions on the Waste Incineration Regulations were issued to the Environment Agency and local authorities – the regulators of the legislation. The guidance released today is aimed at operators of incineration and co-incineration plants, waste producers and waste managers as well as regulators.
The document covers the definitions of waste and incineration, operating and monitoring conditions required by the regulations, emission limit values and calculations for co-incinerators. It also includes copies of the relevant legislation.
DEFRA has invited people with experience of applying the regulations to comment on the guidance. The deadline for consultation responses is May 16, 2003.
