Defra appoints two non-executive board members

In a recent announcement from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Environment Agency, two individuals have been appointed as non-executive directors to the Environment Agency board by the environment secretary. 

The board of the Environment Agency comprises of a chairperson and ten members. 

Brittany Harris and Maya Leibman have been chosen to join the board having started their roles on 1 April 2024. Their tenure will extend for three years, concluding on 31 March 2027. 

The appointments have been made in accordance with the Governance Code on Public Appointments, reflecting a commitment to merit-based selections. 

Alan Lovell, chair of the Environment Agency said: “I am delighted to welcome Maya and Brittany to the board. They both bring invaluable experience in innovation and the use of data. I have no doubt that they will both make significant contributions, particularly in those vital areas.” 

Board 

Brittany Harris, a civil engineer by trade, founded Qualis Flow in 2018 and held a board position at Cambridge Wireless from 2020 to 2023. She currently serves as an Enterprise Fellow at the Royal Academy of Engineering and is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Harris also is a guest lecturer across multiple universities and was honoured as the Entrepreneur of the Year 2023 by West Country Women. 

Maya Leibman served as the chief information officer at American Airlines for the past decade. Beyond aviation, she holds roles as a non-executive director and member of the Governance Committee at Acuity Brands, an industrial technology company with a valuation of $4 (£3.2) billion.  

Ms Leibman recently assumed the position of chairperson at Enterprise Alumni, a technology firm. Additionally, she lends her expertise to Breaking Down Barriers, a nonprofit organisation focused on promoting diversity in the pilot profession, where she serves as a board member.
