Team entries are already flooding in for the one-day mixed gender, six-a-side tournament, which will be held at the University's Park Campus, with registration starting at 9am.

The event will involve group matches, followed by a knockout stage to determine the winner of the tournament, which was won last year by Bristol-based consultancy firm Eunomia, who defeated waste management company Greenstar UK 1-0 on penalties in a keenly-fought final (see letsrecycle.com story).

Last year's tournament was contested by 29 teams, and this year's event is shaping up to be every bit as successful , with the day's football fun complemented by the always-popular crossbar challenge, which is this year being sponsored by environmental consultancy Regeneris.

The event is being jointly organised by letsrecycle.com and the University of Northampton, and commenting in the build-up to the tournament, letsrecycle.com's managing editor, Steve Eminton, said: “We've already had a great level of interest in this year's Waste World Cup, but with the date now set, we're calling on anyone who fancies entering a team to get involved.

“Everyone involved in the waste and recycling sector – from waste management companies and consultants through to the third sector and local authorities – is welcome to enter, and enjoy a great chance to build team spirit and take part in what promises to be another unmissable day of football.”

Entering a team for the Waste World Cup costs £150 per team for local authorities and £250 for corporate entries. All teams participating can have a squad of up to 10 players, but teams are reminded that they must have a minimum of two female players on the pitch at any one time.
