Date set for tenth Waste World Cup

Date set for tenth Waste World Cup

With 2012 proving to be a huge year for British sport, all eyes will be on Northampton on September 7 for the most hotly contested sporting event in the waste and recycling calendar, the Waste World Cup.

The one-day, mixed gender, six a-side football tournament, which this year celebrates its tenth anniversary, takes place at the University of Northamptons Park Road campus, and brings together teams from across the waste industry.

There are still a limited number of team spaces available for the 24-team competition, hosted by letsrecycle.com and Smart Solutions, which will also feature a football freestyle demonstration, crossbar and wheelie bin challenges and a post-match barbecue.

Last year saw North-London based ACM Environmental carry home the trophy after a 1-0 victory over Simply Waste Solutions in a tightly contested final. The 2012 contest is set to host a number of familiar faces, including two-time champions Valpak, who will be seeking to avenge their quarter final defeat at the hands of Simply Waste last year.

The event will involve group matches, followed by a knockout stage to determine the winner of the tournament.

letsrecycle.com editor Steve Eminton, said: Anyone involved in the waste and recycling sector – from waste management companies and consultants through to the third sector and local authorities is welcome to enter, and enjoy a great opportunity to build team spirit and take part in what promises to be another unmissable day of football.

Entering a team for the Waste World Cup costs 250 + VAT per team for local authorities and 495 + VAT for corporate entries. All teams participating can have a squad of up to 10 players, but teams must have a minimum of two female players on the pitch at any one time.
