Dalkia to come under Veolia brand

By Tom Goulding

Energy specialist Dalkia plc is to come under the Veolia brand name, following the closure of a transaction agreement between EDF and Veolia Environnement on Friday (July 25).

The rebranding, which was announced today (July 28), sees the Dalkia name dropped to become fully integrated with the Veolia UK group, which brings its 120,000 tonnes-per-year biomass facility in County Durham under the Veolia name.

Dalkia which is a sister company of Veolia – specialises in energy generation and efficiency across a number of sectors, including waste and recycling.

Under the acquisition, Veolia proposes that it will now be able to add energy generation, control and management services to its portfolio.

And, Veolia also states it will be able to provide its biomass, biogas, and combined heat and power customers with an expert service on reducing carbon emissions.

The move follows the closure of a transaction agreement between Veolia Environnement and energy company EDF on Friday (July 25), which saw Veolia acquire all of Dalkias international operations except those in France (see letsrecycle.com story).

Biomass

Alongside a contract to provide electricity to a Swansea-based hospital, Dalkia currently operates a biomass plant in County Durham, which burns 120,000 tonnes of waste wood per year (see letsrecycle.com story).

The Biomass Energy Centre in Chilton was one of the first waste wood biomass facilities to be developed in the UK for the specific purpose of supplying electricity to the National Grid, rather than to an industrial site.

Dalkia also had plans to construct a 360,000 tonnes-per-year capacity biomass plant for waste wood at Pollington in Yorkshire, which was originally scheduled to begin operations this year but has been subject to a number of delays (see letsrecycle.com story).

Commenting on the rebrand, Estelle Brachlianoff, Veolias senior executive vice president for UK and Ireland, said: Veolia has always been the UKs leading environmental solutions provider, and bringing our energy arm, Dalkia, fully on board truly cements us as a team.

We know this will be only a benefit to our customers now and going forward, as they will be open to a larger range of services helping them be more sustainable into the future.
