Ministers launched the 2.5 million euro campaign in Killadeas, County Fermanagh, last week. A joint initiative between the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland and the Department for Environment, Heritage and Local Government in the Republic, it has received funding from the European Union.
Northern Ireland Minister for the Environment, Angela Smith, said: “Tackling waste is an enormous challenge for all of us. It is fast becoming the single most limiting factor to our well-being. If we are to make real progress towards better use of resources, we must radically re-think our current habits.”
Mr Martin Cullen, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in the Republic said the campaign “demonstrates how both governments are working together to tackle waste in a positive way that benefits both the environment and local business”.
The campaign builds on the “Wake up to Waste” awareness programme in Northern Ireland and “Race Against Waste” in the Republic. It will feature adverts with “well-known” television personalities Northern Ireland Actress Olivia Nash and Irish gardening guru Diarmuid Gavin from now until the end of November.
The co-operation between the two administrations follows similar close working in the issue of fridge recycling, where a single “all-island” contract was awarded to process units collected by local authorities (see letsrecycle.com story).
