According to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, eight fire crews were initially called to a “large fire” at the facility on Carr Hill at 9:20pm on Monday, 5 April.
At its height there were 12 fire engines at the site, and residents were warned to keep their windows closed as there was “ a lot of smoke in the area”.
Crews remained on site overnight and on 6 April seven fire engines were on site.
“The service expects to be in attendance at the incident for the next few days, still, and an investigation into the cause will take place in due course.”
In an update this morning, the fire service said five fire engines remain on the scene and the smoke plume has now reduced considerably.

Morris Metals
The plant forms part of the Morris Metals business. [updated 7 April 2021]
In a statement, the company thanked the Fire Service for its help and noted that the fire had been limited to one storage building.
The statement said: “We can confirm that a fire has taken place at Morris & Co (Handlers) Ltd at our facility at J3 Business Park. We are happy to report that there were no injuries and the site was evacuated safely. The fire has been contained as per the Fire Containment Plan and therefore damage has been restricted to one material storage building, with only smoke damage to any neighbouring units.”
The company added: “We would like to take the opportunity to extend our thanks to the South Yorkshire Fire Department, whom Morris & Co (Handlers) Ltd will continue to assist as required.”
Morris and Co deal with ferrous and non-ferrous material including; Steel Cans (loose and baled), Incinerator Scrap, Mixed Cans and Low-grade UBCs.
Advice
Motorists travelling in the area are also still advised to keep their windows and air vents closed and to turn off their air conditioning.
Road closures remain in place, but the fire service said “agencies on scene are currently looking at whether some parts of the road can be opened up again”.
Locals are still advised to keep doors and windows closed if they are being affected by the smoke.
