The money comes from the Big Lottery Fund, a National Lottery good cause distributor and is managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts and nine consortium partners.
Sleaford and District Furniture Recycling Project (SDFRP) collects and refurbishes unwanted household furniture and electrical items for redistribution to families in need. It also provides training and volunteering opportunities to members of the local community and National Probation Service.
Thanks to the CRED award, the SDFRP will be extending its reuse operation into the South Kesteven District Council area, particularly in housing estates in Grantham. The money will go towards the purchase of land and construction of new premises, a new collection vehicle and staffing.
Commenting on the award John Jackson, manager of SDFRP, said: “The project has gone from strength to strength over the last decade and currently redistributes many thousands of appliances and items of furniture to the disadvantaged every year. This new CRED funding will allow the charity to build on its success and expand operations into the South Kesteven District Council area.”
CRED has awarded over 1 million to community recycling, reuse and composting projects in the East Midlands region.
Mick McGrath of the Big Lottery Fund said: “This is CRED's first furniture project in the region and is an excellent example of environmental and social organisations working together. It will reduce waste, help families set up home and provide opportunities for people to gain skills and in turn give something back to their community.”
