WRAP – the Waste and Resources Action Programme – is asking for expressions of interest to run trials exploring different methods of collecting food waste for composting.
” We are keen to work with a range of authorities and include a good cross-section of scheme types. “
– Linda Crichton, WRAP
The project should see schemes tested ranging from separate collection rounds for food waste to schemes where food waste is collected alongside dry recyclables. WRAP is also hoping to test food waste schemes in local authority areas where diverse conditions and issues are faced.
Funding support is not being limited to councils looking to run new schemes – those already operating separate food waste collections can seek funding to develop services or communications activities.
The trials will be carried out from this October until March 2008.
Linda Crichton, manager of WRAP's local authority support service ROTATE, said developing effective food waste collections would be the “next big challenge” for many local authorities.
Ms Crichton said: “We are keen to work with a range of authorities and include a good cross-section of scheme types to develop a better understanding of the issues and challenges in different local authority contexts.”
Support
Support under the WRAP project could be provided for scheme design and planning, design or modification of collection vehicles, production of communications materials and the leasing of equipment or vehicles.
WRAP could also support the accessing of containers and the monitoring and evaluation of trials.
