Council worker stabbed at civic amenity site

A Newham council worker, employed at the East London Waste Authority civic amenity site in Newham remains in intensive care today after being stabbed at the site, last weekend.

It is believed the employee was attacked by a member of the public as he conducted his job for the Newham’s public works department at the Jenkins Lane site. He was overseeing access into the site.

He was taken to Newham General Hospital following the incident which occurred on Sunday afternoon, after a member of the public called police and ambulance services, and is understood to have undergone surgery.

Although it has not been confirmed what triggered off the attack, it is believed a dispute over commercial waste being brought into the site under the pretence it was household waste was a prompt. Newham CID, which is currently investigating the incident said: “The circumstances in which the attack took place are unclear and there have been no arrests so far. His next of kin has been informed.”

Jenkins Lane is a large disposal site which handles a wide range of materials for recycling, including paper, glass, drink cans, oil, rubble, textiles, fridges, car batteries and green waste.

A Newham council spokesperson: “We can’t comment on the incident as details of this are confidential.”
