Cory submits plans for Cornish C&I waste MRF

Cory Environmental has unveiled plans to develop a 35,000 tonne-a-year capacity materials recycling facility near Redruth in Cornwall as part of a commercial and industrial waste-focused project.

The London-based waste company has submitted a planning application to Cornwall council for the integrated waste management project, which would be built at the planned Bio Park site at Scorrier.

As well as a materials recycling facility for dry recyclables, the project would involve the development of an 115,000 tonne-a-year capacity bulk waste transfer facility.

This aspect of the site would be used for the temporary storage and transfer of residual waste from businesses, but would also be designed to produce refuse derived fuel from the residual waste using shredding and then a magnet to remove metals.

Nigel Carr, general manager for Cory Environmental Municipal Services said: Our proposals for an integrated recycling and residual waste transfer facility at the planned Bio Park near Scorrier will help Cornish businesses to improve recycling levels and divert more waste from landfill.

These proposals fit within the agreed development framework for the Bio Park site and will deliver a facility that builds on years of public consultation. Cory has developed the plans to provide a much needed commercial and industrial waste facility for businesses in Cornwall. Environmentally beneficial features of the proposals include the generation of electricity with solar photovoltaic roof panels.

Cory set up its Cornwall operation in 1998 when it won the waste collection and street cleansing contract for the now defunct Carrick district council. While this contract was scheduled to run until 2015, the move to a single Cornwall unitary council means it is now being ended next year.

Cory has tendered for this new Cornwall contract, but said regardless of the outcome of this procurement it would still need to relocate from the Newham base in Truro it uses for its Cornish operations next year in order to expand the commercial waste operations it currently runs from the site.
