Cory Environmental opens first AD plant

Cory Environmental has today announced the opening of its first UK anaerobic digestion facility in Somerset, built as part of a seven year waste treatment contract with North Somerset council.

The 12,000 tonne-a-year capacity Aisecome Way plant in Weston-super-Mare will process 7,500 tonnes of food waste from North Somerset, with the capability to generate up to 500kw of energy per hour.

As part of the North Somerset contract, which is believed to be worth in the region of 80 million and includes an extension provision to March 2024, Cory is responsible for treating the authoritys food, green and residual waste.

Furthermore, the contractor has also assisted the council in making improvements to other facilities also located at the Aisecome Way site, including construction of a waste transfer station and improvements to its Household Waste Recycling Centre network.

Alistair Holl, director at Cory Environmental, welcomed the development as a major milestone for the company.

He said: We took a central role in delivering this facility, acting as main contractor for the project and construction and also taking ownership of the entire plant and site design.Through careful project management we were able to go from planning consent to energy production in just 18 months, and commencement of construction works to process commissioning in under seven months.

This is testament to the expertise and commitment of our team. The second phase of development will see an upgrade of the plant to a minimum of 1MW of electricity production, doubling our green energy generation at the site.

Benefits

Councillor Peter Bryant, North Somerset councils executive member responsible for waste and recycling added: We are delighted that the AD plant is now complete and that food waste in North Somerset can be dealt with locally with the added benefit of producing energy to power nearly 1,000 homes.
