Cory is lending one of its barges – normally used to transfer waste from London's Western Riverside waste authority – as the home of the new campaign which is spreading the charity's fund-raising message from the River Thames.
The Help for Heroes charity raises money to provide support for UK troops injured in service and has already raised £77 million. The current campaign, backed by Cory, has two main fund-raising aspects: a call for members of the public to text in the three letters “JCB” to 70100 which will confirm a £5 donation; and an online auction for one of the excavators which is branded with the Union Jack colours.
Speaking on behalf of the charity, one of its founders, Bryn Parry, said: “We have a range of projects we are working on and this appeal will help pay for 200 festive stockings to be supplied to the service men and women at Headley Court.”
JCB UK and Ireland sales director Yvette Henshall-Bell said the company was “delighted” to be supporting the Christmas appeal. “JCB is a manufacturer based in Staffordshire and is producing sturdy, dependable products which are like our servicemen in the forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. I have the utmost respect for them and they need our practical help.
For Cory, John Boldon, the company's director of planning and communications, said he would very much welcome the support of individuals and companies in the sector for the campaign. “We are so proud to be assisting with such a worthy cause and hope that through the efforts of JCB and other partners that funds will be raised for the Help for Heroes charity.
“It is important to remember the injured service men and their families at this time of year. It is very sobering to see the soldiers present who have been severely injured in service to their country.”
