Cornish council runs head office recycling campaign

A Cornish district council is this week running a war on waste campaign in its own offices.

Caradon District Council is hoping that the week-long campaign will help drive home the recycling and reuse message to its workforce of 400, based in Liskeard. The authority has set itself a target of reducing its waste by 6.75 tonnes a year by 2005, a reduction of 50% on its figure for 1999.

Measures introduced include reductions in the number of office waste bins to encourage staff to make greater use of recycling bins, asking staff to suggest new ways of reducing waste and the introduction of envelope re-use and recycling.

Alex Lochhead, Caradon's Local Agenda 21 officer, said: “Caradon has done a terrific job of reducing its waste over the last year, but we hope to do even better this year. The War on Waste Week is a way of reminding staff of the little things that we can all do that add up to a big difference for our environment.”
