A consultation on the South West strategy was launched by the South West Regional Assembly with the support of the South West Centre of the Institute of Wastes Management last week as the first step to producing a regional waste strategy.
The strategy aims to present a visionary and effective way of dealing with waste in the region by minimising the amount of waste produced and managing waste that is produced more effectively by developing its potential as a resource. The assembly also wants to ensure that reuse and recycling becomes the norm rather than the exception. A co-ordinated waste strategy will ensure the best and most effective solutions for the region are identified and the strategy will also encourage waste prevention amongst South West consumers.
The consultation on the regional strategy will run for the next five months and during this time a series of sector and area-based consultative workshops will be run. The responses to the consultation, will help in the development of a draft regional waste strategy. The consultation will look at the opportunities and challenges that are being faced by the environment, the waste management industry, local authorities, the community and business; and how the region can develop a co-ordinated visionary approach to deliver sustainable waste management.
The South West Regional Assembly is a partnership between all local authorities, councils and unitary authorities and representatives from social and economic organisations in the South West.
