Located at the Protos Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) near Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, the project has been described as “the UK’s first” full-scale CCS plant linked to an Energy from Waste (EfW) plant.
With planning and environmental permitting now in place, the three-and-a-half-year construction and commissioning programme will see Kanadevia Inova acting as Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor.
The facility is expected to be operational by mid-2029.
Mark Burrows-Smith, CEO of Encyclis, commented: “We are pleased to be partnering once again with Kanadevia Inova, this time to build and commission a landmark carbon capture plant.
“Harnessing Kanadevia Inova’s proven carbon capture technology, we are working to transform waste treatment in the UK, not only accelerating progress towards climate change targets but clearing a pathway for wider deployment.”
Protos ERF to process 500k tonnes of waste
Once operational, Protos ERF will aim to process up to 500,000 tonnes of residual waste annually.
The facility is expected to capture and collect around 370,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually from the plant’s flue gas.
Flue gases produced during waste combustion at the ERF will be diverted to a new carbon capture unit, where a filtration process will strip out the carbon dioxide.
Captured carbon dioxide will then be transported via a pipeline, operated by ENI, to Liverpool Bay and stored beneath the seabed.
Kanadevia Inova’s technology is being trialled at Rookery South ERF in Bedfordshire in a 16-month pilot programme which began in June 2025.
Fabio Dinale, Executive VP of Business Development at Kanadevia Inova, said: “After the successful implementation of Carbon Capture technology at two pilot projects at Ferrybridge and Rookery South, Kanadevia Inova is extremely proud to be designing and building this full-scale decarbonisation project for our long-term clients Encyclis at Protos Energy Recovery Facility.”
The development follows confirmation of government support for the Protos CCS project through an agreement between Encyclis and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
Kanadevia Inova’s UK projects
Kanadevia Inova recently completed construction of Enfinium’s £500 million Skelton Grange facility in Leeds, which entered operations in September 2025.
The company is also the principal engineering, procurement and construction contractor for Medworth Energy from Waste Combined Heat and Power (EfW CHP) facility in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, which began full-scale construction last week (2 October 2025).
