The figures make CRN members collectively the largest single operator of kerbside collections in the UK. And they represent a 50% increase in the number of households benefiting from CRN members’ collection schemes in the last two years. In May 2000, CRN figures showed that just over one million households had regular collections from community recycling organisations.
Andy Moore, CRN's coordinator, said: “The community sector is growing exponentially. This figure goes to show that we must be doing something right.”
He added: “We’re also keen to help local authorities meet their targets and to deliver on the UK’s national waste strategies.”
The Community Recycling Network is the umbrella organisation for more than 300 community groups, co-operatives and not-for-profit businesses in the community waste sector. Its aim is to promote community-based recycling as the most effective way of tackling the UK’s growing waste problem. Its members have achieved some of the highest recycling rates in the UK.
