LondonWaste, in partnership with North London Waste Authority (NLWA), has set up a group for those interested in recycling called the North London Recycling Forum. The forum will play a key role in trying to increase recycling in the capital and develop a waste strategy for North London.
By focusing on the role of communities and community groups, LondonWaste hopes that the forum will encourage the sharing of best practice and improve relationships between the community sector, councils and waste management companies. Topics raised at the meetings will be used to help develop NLWA's waste strategy which covers the disposal of waste from the seven London boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest.
David Sargent, managing director of LondonWaste, said: “If we are going to increase recycling in North London then it is crucial that we work closely with communities. It is important to change attitudes to recycling because if we continue with our throw-away lifestyles then we will only create problems for future generations. I would urge anyone involved in community recycling programmes to come to the meeting and participate.”
The decision to set up the forum is a result of the North London Recycling Conference which took place last summer and looked at barriers to recycling in London.
The first meeting will focus on the community sector and will take place on February 13 at LondonWaste’s site in Edmonton.
