The scheme aims to develop a low technology, small-scale system for composting catering waste that will meet the strict controls of the imminent amendment to the Animal By-Products Order, due in April 2003.
The 12-month research project is funded by a 22,000 grant from Biffaward, which distributes Biffa Waste Services landfill tax credits, plus 2,483 from Kent County Council. It will involve the collection of domestic, commercial and institutional catering waste from the village of Wye in Kent. This will be processed in the trial facility, which will be modified accordingly.
Director of WyeCycle Richard Boden said: “Finding safe, affordable solutions to the catering waste issue is critical to achieving high diversion rates.” The organisers hope the project will be useful to other community composters considering the use of catering waste.
