The Committee is particularly interested in investigating innovative solutions to waste management problems as part of a move to ensure that measures are to taken to ensure that the Waste Strategy is delivered.
The Committee has decided that the terms of reference of the inquiry should be: “Taking account of the on-going inquiry by the Environmental Audit Committee into current and past practice, as well as the report from the Government's Strategy Unit, the Committee will examine what steps should in future be taken in order to move waste management up the 'waste hierarchy' as set out in the Waste Framework Directive.”
In particular the Committee will look at best practice in “recycling, energy recovery during incineration, producer responsibility, and waste minimisation.”
The EFRA committee explains that whereas the Environmental Audit inquiry looking backwards, at how past actions have led to the current position, this new inquiry is intended to look forwards to what ought to be done in future.
It is thought that MPs who make up the Committee are keen to ensure that some radical measures are taken to ensure that proper progress is made. There are some concerns that the Strategy Unit report may not be radical enough and by carrying out its investigation the Committee will be able to push government along to make sure measures are in place to drive waste up the waste hierarchy.
The Committee invites, by Monday January 6 2003, written evidence which
addresses these terms of reference. Evidence must be submitted preferably by e-mail to EFRA Committee The e-mail must include a contact name,
telephone number and postal address. The e-mail should also make clear who the submission is from.
