Commission warned over changes to packaging directive

The European Commission should not look to introduce far-reaching changes to the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive according to the pan-European trade association ASSURRE.

The organisation, based in Brussels, says it would be counterproductive to extend the debate on revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive beyond recovery and recycling targets for the time being.

Its comments come after the recent publication of a working document by the European Commission’s waste management unit which suggests looking at a range of issues from waste prevention through to the definition of recycling.

Bill Duncan, managing director of ASSURRE, said that the document went into territory beyond that required under the current revision of targets. “For a thorough revision to take place, the process should be properly staged from the outset. This is a long-term issue which cannot be resolved within a short-term decision-making process.
