The letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence recognise innovation, dedication and success in nine categories of recycling and sustainable waste management.

Categories include awards for Commercial Recycling Champion – sponsored by producer responsibility compliance scheme Valpak – and an award for Commercial Waste Management Initiative – sponsored by waste management company Onyx Environmental.

”We are interested in any projects or initiatives which help the UK to meet its increasingly challenging recycling and recovery targets.“
– Steve Gough, CEO of Valpak

The awards ceremony takes place at London's Savoy Hotel at lunchtime on October 21, with Environment minister Elliot Morley making the keynote address and broadcaster Darren Jordon on hand to present the event.

Support for the awards has come from Defra's Waste Implementation Programme, the Environmental Services Association and the National Association of Waste Disposal Officers.

Companies or individuals in the commercial and industrial sectors can enter for the two commercial waste and recycling categories of the awards up until September 3, when the judging process begins.

Commercial Recycling Champion
The Commercial Recycling Champion category seeks to reward the devotion of an individual or team within the commercial and industrial sector in promoting recycling within their company or business solution. Category sponsor Valpak provides producer responsibility services to over 3,000 companies in the commercial and industrial sector.

Commenting on his company's sponsorship of the Commercial Recycling Champion category, Valpak chief executive Steve Gough said: “Valpak is pleased to support the letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence. As the UK's leading Producer Responsibility scheme, we are interested in any projects or initiatives which help the UK to meet its increasingly challenging recycling and recovery targets.

“Our sponsorship of these awards helps us to recognise and applaud the efforts which are being made to ensure the UK complies in the future,” Mr Gough added.

Commercial Waste Management Initiative
The Commercial Waste Management Initiative award will recognise the efforts of businesses in specific initiatives they have taken to improve the recycling of their waste materials or products, thereby improving their company performance as a whole. For larger firms, this might mean achievements within divisions or at particular sites.

”This is an excellent opportunity to market and make public the tremendous number of success stories that are evident within waste management as a whole. “
– Kevin Hurst, Onyx Environmental

The category has been supported by Onyx Environmental, part of Veolia Environment, a company that operates waste collection services for over 25,000 commercial and industrial customers across the UK.

Onyx marketing director Kevin Hurst said the commercial waste category of the Awards for Excellence is an “excellent opportunity to market and make public the tremendous number of success stories that are evident within waste management as a whole.”

Mr Hurst explained: “The decision to sponsor the best Commercial Waste Management Initiative came from a widely held view that recycling and landfill diversion targets will not be reached without sustainable commitment and participation from the private sector.

“Onyx felt it was important to reward these forward-thinking companies that were demonstrating real excellence in innovative waste management practices,” he added.

Entries for the 2004 Awards for Excellence in recycling and waste management should be received by September 3, 2004.
