Coca-Cola launches ‘twist’ water bottle to aid recycling

Coca-Cola European Partners has launched a ‘twist’ PET plastic bottle for its Abbey Well Spring Water brand, designed to encourage recycling by being easier to crush.

The bottle was created by British designers Kinneir Dufort following a £14m investment in Coca-Cola European Partners’ (CCEP) bottling facility in Morpeth, Northumberland.

The ‘twist’ design aims to increase the ease of recycling for consumers

Using up to 32% less plastic than the previous model, the new design requires less energy to make, transport and recycle, CCEP claims. The bottle is made up of 25% rPET (recycled plastic).

The ‘twist’ design aims to increase the ease of recycling for consumers by allowing them to twist the plastic into a more compact format for disposal. The compact twisted bottles are designed to be space-saving, and taking up less room in recycling containers.

To guide consumers on twisting their bottles, the plastic bottle features arrows contouring in two different directions as part of the design.

A ‘Recycle Me’ label also features on the design to remind consumers to recycle and with a prompt to ‘Peel Me Here!’ the reverse side features further information about the bottle’s recycling qualities.

The new design bottle is being rolled out from this month.

‘Innovation’

Linda Crichton, head of resource management at WRAP, said: “This is another great innovation from Coke, reducing material usage whilst ensuring the bottle remains recyclable is really important for resource efficiency. Reminding consumers that the bottles can be recycled is also really important.”

Jane Buckley, operations director at Coca-Cola European Partners, Morpeth, added: “We’re very proud to be the official manufacturer of Abbey Well Spring Water and with the water sector continuing to grow, it’s more important than ever to minimise our environmental impact and encourage more recycling.

“This new innovation is a positive step towards our commitment of reducing the carbon footprint of the drink in your hand, and driving positive sustainable contribution to both the environment and society.”

MP for Wansbeck Ian Lavery said: “I’m delighted that Coca-Cola European Partners are planning on producing this innovative new environmentally-friendly bottle at Morpeth in my constituency. This had been made possible by the recent £14M investment in to the site and shows support for British soft drinks manufacturing.”

CCEP’s Morpeth site is the only source of Abbey Well Spring Water, and the only Coca-Cola water site in Great Britain. The water is bottled at source from a natural spring in Morpeth.

CCEP also recently worked Viridor and plastics recycling firm PET UK on a project to reprocess PET liner waste from the product packaging for its Smartwater bottled water range, which is also produced at the Morpeth site (see letsrecycle.com story).
