CMA approves Severn Trent’s Andigestion acquisition

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has approved Severn Trent Green Power’s bid to acquire anaerobic digestion specialist Andigestion Ltd for an undisclosed sum.

Andigestion operates AD plants at Holsworthy, North Devon, and Bishop’s Cleeve, Gloucestershire

Severn Trent announced the plans in February 2023. Andigestion operates an 80,000 tonne per year capacity AD plant at Holsworthy, North Devon, and a 34,000 tonne per year capacity plant at Bishop’s Cleeve in Gloucestershire.

The company said the deal would bring an additional 45GWh of energy output every year and expand Severn Trent Green Power’s business into southwest England.

On Friday, 18 August, the CMA cleared the acquisition, saying it will publish its full decision in due course.

Christer Stoyell, managing director of Severn Trent Green Power, said: “We welcome today’s decision by the CMA concluding its Phase 1 investigation and providing STGP with the clearance to complete its acquisition of the Andigestion portfolio.

“This acquisition will improve localised competition and expand the geographical coverage of our market-leading operations. We are extremely excited to welcome all incoming employees into the Green Power business. We believe the existing Andigestion portfolio has the potential for significant growth and we look forward to delivering this in the coming years.”

Plans

Severn Trent operates nine AD facilities and five composting sites across the Midlands, South Wales and London, recycling more than 400,000 tonnes of food waste and 120,000 tonnes of green waste every year.

My Stoyell added: “Having delivered double-digit growth in renewable energy generation since 2020, the announcement marks the start of a very exciting next chapter for all of us at Green Power.

“Following CMA clearance, we look forward to welcoming our new Andigestion colleagues and working with them to develop new growth opportunities and provide our award-winning services to even more households and businesses – powering the UK towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.”
