CIWM backs challenging EU waste proposals

By Will Date

Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) chief executive Steve Lee has welcomed the level of ambition shown within the European Commissions resource package, which proposes to increase recycling targets within the EU.

Key among the proposals is an increased target for EU Member States to recycle or reuse 70% of municipal waste by 2030, an increase on the current 50% by 2020 target.

The Commission is also proposing a ban on sending recyclable materials such as plastics, paper, metals, glass and biodegradable waste to landfill by 2025

In an interview with letsrecycle.com, Mr Lee said the proposals deserved the support of the waste sector, but said that the UK still had some way to go to ensure it is ready to meet the proposed targets. He also reiterated his call for greater support to be given to local authorities, some of whom are struggling to meet existing targets.
