Cheshire Recycling transfers collection force in 7m deal

Cheshire Recycling has been awarded a long-term contract worth more than 7 million to City Logistics Ltd for the collection of used newspapers and magazines from 450,000 homes in the North West of England.

City Logistics, which is part of Milton Keynes-based City Truck Group Ltd, is to manage the existing Cheshire Recycling fleet of 22 7.5 tonne collection vehicles and 36 permanent Cheshire Recycling staff will transfer to City Logistics. Many of the vehicles are small tipping trucks with cages which contain the loose newspapers and magazines. In addition, City will replace the fleet when the current contract hire agreement expires in 2002.

Chris Demetriou, Northern Area Manager for Cheshire Recycling said, “City Logistics were awarded the contract because they were competitive and were convincing about their professional, innovative and positive approach to dealing with service issues. Cheshire Recycling has been at the forefront of kerbside recycling in the UK since 1986. Now covering 1.5 million homes and dealing with 140 local authorities, we are always open minded in forming the best available partnerships to maintain and improve our service for the future.”

Cheshire Recycling is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bridgewater Paper Company, part of the world’s largest newsprint manufacturer Abitibi Consolidated.

City Logistics says it is to form a “dedicated on-site management team to analyse and organise routing in the most efficient and cost effective manner”.

Currently the paper is collected via a blue bag system usually on a fortnightly basis. Council areas covered include Vale Royal, Macclesfield, Wirral, Ellesmere Port and Sefton.
