The council said the February 26 event, to be held in Ellesmere Port, would enable groups to discover “how they can earn cash from a variety of schemes including delivering waste paper or plastic bottles to specialised companies for reprocessing.”
The seminar programme is being advised by the Bristol-based Recycling Consortium under the Community Waste Action Programme. Cheshire’s executive member for environment Andrew Needham said participating groups would be paid through savings in Landfill Tax.
Last year across the whole county 432,570 tonnes of waste was collected, of which 15.9% was recycled. The county council achieved a recycling rate of 30.1%. Rates for Cheshire districts varied between 18.5% in Chester and 5.9% in Vale Royal.
Recycling Consortium development manager Mark Walton said: “Groups will collect recyclable material, and they could be new groups or ones that already exist focused on something else but can see an opportunity.
“It could involve art projects using recycled materials, small business projects or re-use by local groups into products for sale. The list is endless,” he added.
He said the consortium was acting in an advisory role and not as a contractor as it does in Bristol. The Community Waste Action Programme has been running for two years, funded by Biffaward and Shell Better Britain.
