Waste management firm Casepak has won a two year contract to process 18,000 tonnes per year of dry recyclables on behalf of Charnwood borough council.

The material will be processed at the company’s Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Leicester, having previously been processed by Viridor at its MRF in Crayford.

Casepak was awarded the contract, worth close to £1.5 million, following an open tender process. The contract is already in operation and will run for the next two years, with an option to extend for a further two years.

Cllr Hilary Fryer, cabinet member for open spaces and leisure at Charnwood borough council, said: “I am delighted we are now working with Casepak. They are a local company and it means these materials can be processed within Leicestershire, minimising the amount of transportation involved.

“We are committed to protecting our environment for future generations and supporting the local economy so this contract delivers on both fronts.”

Collaboration

Casepak will assist the council in improving recycling services across the borough, the company claims, as well as supplying materials data outlining the composition of material recycled.

The council will also develop and deliver targeted information to residents in a bid to increase participation and awareness of the types of material that can be recycled.

Georgina Cullen, business development director at Casepak, commented: “This partnership enables Casepak to deliver first class recycling services within Leicestershire. We operate one of the UK’s leading MRFs and our team is committed to quality. We look forward to working with Charnwood to boost recycling rates across the borough.”

Dry mixed recyclables, including material from 70,000 homes in the borough, will be collected by the council’s contractor, Serco, and sent to Casepak’s £21million MRF located on the Braunstone Frith Industrial Estate, Leicester. Materials include plastic bottles and tubs, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, glass and food and drinks cans.

Casepak’s MRF has the capacity to process up to 150,000 tonnes of material each year, recovering 95% of the material processed.
