The two companies will combine to sort material collected from 110,000 households in the West Midlands local authority area, as well as fromrecycling centres and bring banks, which will amount to around 28,000 tonnes-a-year.
It will involve material being sent to the Casepak materials recycling facility (MRF) which is currently under construction at the Braunstone Frith Industrial Estate in Leicester (see letsrecycle.com story).
Under the deal, Casepak and SCA intend to help boost Walsalls recycling rate from its current level of 47% to above the local authoritys intended target of 50%. The contract came into effect in April 2011.
The arrangement is intended to complement the existing recycling collection service in Walsall, which sees residents able to recycle plastic, cardboard, newspaper and magazines, cans and tins, and glass bottles and jars at the kerbside.
Jamie Morris, executive director for neighbourhood services at Walsall council, said: We welcome this new partnership which will help us to further improve our already very successful track record in recycling across the borough.
MRF
Construction of the 150,000 tonne-a-year capacity Leicester MRF is set to finish in September 2011, with Casepak due to have the 21 million facility operational towards the end of 2011. Until the facility opens, material covered by the contract is being sorted at SCA’s MRF in Southampton.
Casepak is jointly owned by SCA Recycling and G.A.E Smith Holdings.
