This means that CarTakeBack has recovered 4.1 million tonnes of automotive waste since the End of Life Vehicle Regulations were introduced. The parts are then recycled, closing the loop of the circular economy, the company said.
CarTakeBack is a car scrappage company and service provider which allows vehicle manufacturers to fulfil their responsibilities under the EU End of Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive.
ATFs
Most scrap cars are between 10 to 16 years old and have reached a point where they are uneconomical to fix or sell on, the company said.
In 2003, the government ruled that scrap cars can only be disposed of at scrap car recycling centres with an authorised treatment facility licence (ATFs). The licence mandates the company to invest in the necessary equipment to depollute and recycle cars properly.
Despite the fact it is a criminal offence to depose of cars without an ATF licence, CarTakeBack estimates that 600,000 to 1.8 million cars are scrapped each year illegally. Consequently, these cars pose an “environmental hazard”, it said.
Unlicensed scrapyards cut costs by not making the mandatory investments in equipment to prevent pollution. According to CarTakeBack.com, the unlicensed companies are willing to pay more “which inevitably creates an uneven playing field for the ethically responsible companies, leading to more environmental issues as a result”.

The Liverpool-based company was established in 2006 by 10 shredding and recycling companies including Liverpool’s S Norton & Co and West Midland’s based Dunn Bros.
