Dr Jackson, who is a member and former chairman of the European Parliament's environment committee, is currently leading negotiations over the revised EU Waste Framework Directive, which should culminate next year in changes to the foundations of EU waste policy (see letsrecycle.com story).
The highly-respected MEP for South West England will lead a big-name line-up speaking at the one-day conference in central London on January 24, in an event that will help the sector plan for the major changes ahead.
The conference is being organised by the Associate Parliamentary Sustainable Waste Group in association with letsrecycle.com, and will be chaired by Southampton MP Alan Whitehead.
Defra
In a year that will see a new English waste strategy – as well as the culmination of a major review of the foundations of European waste management policy – speakers will include Defra's new head of waste management Roy Hathaway and the Environment Agency's head of waste regulation Liz Parkes.
Discussing various impending legislation changes faced by waste producers and recyclers alike, the event will also hear from Kieran Mayers of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, James Wates of Wates Group and the Strategic Forum for Construction as well as Paul White, director of Social Marketing Practice.
“Major impact”
APSWG manager Stephen Davison said: “Next year promises to have a major impact on the recycling and waste management industry, what with the volume of impending European legislation with which we will all be faced, the impact of WEEE as it finally moves towards implementation, the English waste strategy and how that may affect us as well as its impact on waste behaviour.
