The council has been running pink sack collections for recyclables in certain areas of the county, while other areas have a blue box collection. But in order to avoid confusion and provide a clear recycling message, blue is now the single colour for recycling in Carmarthenshire.
Residents in Llandovery, Llangadog, Pencader, Cwmann and Llanbydder have now been given blue sacks rather than pink. And further residents in Llandeilo, Pontargothi, Penybanc, Salem, Llanfynydd and Cynwel, Elfed have also been brought into the extended scheme.
There is no change to the materials that can be collected through the scheme, except that cardboard has now been added to the sack collections. This is on top of paper, plastic and cans, which were able to be collected through the pink sack service.
Response
Environment executive board member, Councillor Pam Palmer, said: “We are trying to make it easier for people to recycle their rubbish and we have been delighted by the immediate response to the blue bag scheme.”
The blue bag and blue box schemes are part of the county's new waste strategy, in place to meet targets of recycling 25% of waste in 2006/07 and 40% in 2009/10. The council has said that there will be further changes to the current schemes, including the possible replacement of the blue box scheme with a sack or wheeled bin service.
Carmarthenshire has had troubles with its recycling service this year because of a disagreement between two waste management companies that jointly dealt with its waste. After waste collected during two days had to go to landfill, the council found an alternative solution through a temporary sorting facility at one of its sites (see letsrecycle.com story).
