Caradon hits government&#39s bulky waste target

A south east Cornwall council has hit the government’s target to recycle 25% of bulky waste three years early.

Caradon District Council is working in partnership with the SOFA Project to offer a collection service for household items including furniture and washing machines. For 10 the SOFA Project will collect up to four bulky items and the organisation aims to recover as many of the items as possible for reuse by people in Cornwall.

Council leader, Eric Lewis, said:
“In the past, old furniture and household appliances would have ended up in landfill sites. With the new scheme, we have been able to reuse or recycle a quarter of those items.

“During the first eight months of the scheme, more than 144 tonnes of bulky items were collected. Thanks to people in Caradon taking up the service and SOFA’s involvement in recycling and redistributing items to those in need, we have hit the Government’s 2005 target for bulky waste recycling three years early. It’s a tremendous achievement, and we are very grateful to everyone who has used the service.”

Details of the bulky waste collection service and other recycling services are available on
Caradon's website.
