Can collection schemes win PRN investment from Corus

Two can collection systems have recently benefitted from PRN investment by Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (formerly British Steel). Corus says this demonstrates its long term commitment to steel can recycling.

The PRN (packaging waste recovery note) money is raised through the sale of PRNs which count as documentary evidence that recycling has been carried out under the UK’s packaging recycling law.< /br>

The first project is run by Bristol-based Resourcesaver, part of a large and successful kerbside collection scheme operated by Avon Friends of the Earth encompassing 370,000 households in the South West. An annual average of 2.5 million steel cans (1,000 tonnes) are recovered by the kerbside schemes. The area covered by Resourcesaver in Bristol accounts for 55% of this total.

To ensure Resourcesaver is able to maintain the high volume of steel cans currently collected and recycled, Corus Steel Packaging Recycling has purchased four large 40 cubic yard containers for the dedicated storage and transportation of the steel cans.

Corus Steel Packaging Recycling has also invested in a can separator for Blaenau Gwent Council's Civic Amenity Site in Ebbw Vale. As well as operating a small kerbside scheme covering around 15,000 households, Blaenau Gwent also is part of the Corus Save-a-Can Scheme. To allow the council to become self-sufficient in terms of can sorting at its new storage bay in the Ebbw Vale civic amenity site, Corus has provided funds from PRN sales to buy the can separator for use at the site. The council is also to provide an outlet for mixed cans from two other local authorities – Torfaen and Caerphilly.

David Williams of Corus Steel Packaging Recycling said: “At Corus, we are committed to ensuring that local authority and local community can collection schemes, whether through kerbside or Save-a-Can, are economic to run and of benefit to the communities in which they are operated. Through investment in schemes like those run by Resourcesaver and Blaenau Gwent Council, we have ensured the continued inclusion of steel can collection in both areas.”
