The seven-year contract will be worth approximately 112 million, the council confirmed today. It will involve waste collection and recycling for 94,600 households (see letsrecycle.com story).
Determined
The company is determined to meet the government's recycling rate target of 33% by 2006 for the borough, which currently has a rate of 15%. Central to Onyx's plans to expand recycling in the borough will be increasing facilities available on housing estates.
While 30 estates currently have facilities such as bring banks, ultimately the council hopes this will expand to 200. A spokeswoman for Onyx confirmed: “We are aiming to get 100 as soon as possible.”
Onyx said it would also continue the twice-weekly refuse collections as carried out by its predecessor, Cleanaway-owned Serviceteam.
