Call for entries for 2005 Awards for Excellence

Entries are now being sought for the 2005 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management, organised by letsrecycle.com.

A wide range of organisations from local authorities and waste management companies through to the business sector are invited to enter a wide range of categories.

Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of this year's Awards for Excellence, which offer a broad range of opportunities for hard work, innovation and dedication to be recognised as excellent in the recycling and sustainable waste management arena.”

The awards are given in association with Resource Management and Recovery magazine and are supported by Defra's Waste Implementation Programme, the Environmental Services Association, Environment Agency and National Association of Waste Disposal Officers.

This year's awards will be presented at on 19 October at the Savoy Hotel in London. Closing date for entry is September 5. Full details are available online at Awards for Excellence. For a paper copy of the awards entry form, please email awards form.

Last year

Last year saw 130 entries for the Awards for Excellence. Among last year’s winners were South Cambridgeshire district council, which won the Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative for its recycling achievements, while
a Sunderland shopping centre that worked with retailers, staff and the general public to reduce its waste by 20% was recognised for its achievements. Other winners were an NHS hospital in Ayrshire that ensured the safe segregation, transportation and disposal of more than 20 categories of waste; and a two-man collection crew from Market Harborough who collected nearly 70 tonnes more material for recycling than similar rounds over a 10 month period.

Entries are sought in nine categories this year:

  • Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative, sponsored by Abitibi-Consolidated Recycling Europe;
  • Innovation in Design of a Waste Management Facility, sponsored by ESTET (Environment Services Training & Education Trust);
  • CA Site of the Year;
  • Resource Management Industry and Local Authority Partnership, sponsored by PaperChain;
  • Commercial Recycling Champion, sponsored by Valpak;
  • Local Authority Recycling Champion, sponsored by Waste Implementation Programme (Defra),
  • Commercial Waste Management Initiative;
  • High Street Recycling Champion, sponsored by Severnside and
  • Collection Crew of the Year, sponsored by SITA UK.

Wastelink is sponsoring the pre-lunch drinks at the awards presentation.

Judges

A distinguished panel of judges under the chair of Jeff Cooper – producer responsibility policy manager, Environment Agency – includes Linda Crichton, manager of the ROTATE programme; Steve Eminton, editor, letsrecycle.com; Mark Filley, Waste Implementation Programme; Barbara Herridge, Waste Watch; Rebecca Huck, Wales Environmental Trust; Marian Kelly, Environmental Services Association; Lee Marshall, LARAC; and Chris Murphy, Chartered Institution of Wastes Management.
