The contract is worth 50 to 100 million covers waste collection, recycling, disposal and possible energy-from-waste. The council has not named the remaining candidates in the tendering process.
A statement from the county borough council explained: “The council is considering four companies for the contract at this time. Each tender contains different proposals and the final contract could be worth between 50 and 100 million over the 25 years, depending on which contract options are taken. We are awaiting proposals by December and look forward to working in partnership with the successful bidder.”
The selection process has been predicted to last until the end of 2004 when the successful candidate will be announced. The contract is expected to be signed in early 2005.
Caerphilly council is working with the consultancy firm Babtie Group to select the final service provider.
Gordon Masterton, managing director of Babtie Group's Environment Business Centre, said: “Caerphilly borough council's waste contract is highly significant and will involve the winning candidate delivering a wide-ranging number of crucial services to the local community.”
Babtie's has been appointed by the council as the lead consultant on the management of the procurement of the new waste contract. The consultancy firm's role includes arranging a risk and contract structure workshop for the procurement team.
Mr Masterton said of Babtie's involvement: “We are very pleased to have been appointed lead advisor on this project, we will be working with our client to develop the scope and scale of the project, set performance criteria and ultimately ensure the success of the project by assisting the council in the selection of the organisation best equipped to deliver an excellent service.”
